Wind, rain and snow spreads from west by Sunday
Most of southern Spain and Portugal will be dry and sunny. Warmest in the Algarve at 19C. Fronts moving across Biscay brings patchy rain to northern Iberia, and arrives in western France later. A few showers for the Balearics. Breezy for Corsica and Sardinia. Showery for Italy. Low pressure over the Balkans brings heavy rain and mountain snow. A few showers may also reach Greece.
Chilly across central Europe, with temperatures near or only just above freezing for many areas of Germany, the Alps, Poland and Hungary. Squally wintry showers spreading from the north-west across the Low Countries. Heavy seas on North Sea coasts. Mainly dry for France beneath a ridge of high pressure. Low pressure centred over Scandinavia brings frequent snow to western Norway, but much of southern Sweden may escape dry. Patchy snow and rain for Finland and the Baltic states. Some persistent snow for northern Sweden.
Things deteriorate quickly across western Europe overnight into Sunday as low pressure and fronts spread in from the Atlantic. Heavy rain and strong winds move across France into Germany and the western Alps, preceded by snow to low levels in central Europe, and falling extensively as snow over the mountains all day. Risk of gales or locally stormy winds into the Alps. A cold front extends back to northern Spain bringing heavy rain. Breezy across Iberia, but dry and fairly warm in the south of Spain, up to 20C on some eastern Costas.
Dry and sunny for southern Italy, Greece and the Balkans. Dry until late for the Czech Republic and Poland. A zone of rain and snow affects central Ukraine and Belarus. Wintry showers around the coasts of Scandinavia, but much of central Norway and Sweden should stay dry but cold - widely sub-zero.
