Thundery breakdown

Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 22nd April 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Thunderstorms Portugal, locally also thundery in Spain

Sunday
Areas of thunderstorms affect Portugal and locally in Spain too, although eastern Costas should stay dry and sunny, highs 25C. High pressure across the Mediterranean brings plenty of fair weather to southern Europe. Isolated afternoon showers for southern Italy and Greece . Thundery rain breaking out across the Alps and Carpathian mountains.
A very warm day again for central Europe, temperatures into the mid or upper 20s Celsius across France and Germany, but a risk of thunderstorms across the Benelux region as a cold front comes in from the west, these extending into western Germany. A front moves into western Norway where rain will set in. Meanwhile, Sweden, the Baltic region and Poland stay dry and warm.

Monday
Shallow low pressure over south-western Iberia produces thunderstorms again for western Spain and Portugal. A few showers also for northern Spain into the Pyrenees. A cold front advances south-eastwards across central Europe, producing a zone of heavy possibly thundery rain affecting central-eastern France, the Alps, southern Germany and advancing into Poland and the Czech Republic. Fresher conditions and sunny spells follow across northern France and the Low Countries. Southern Europe remains dry and very warm with lots of strong sunshine around the Mediterranean. Local showers for Romania. Low pressure and fronts push across Scandinavia, bringing outbreaks of rain to Sweden, and showers follow for Norway. Finland should escape dry and fairly warm at 15C.
