New Year's Day
High pressure lies to the west, keeping things settled for France, Spain and Portugal. Highs 17C in the south-west. Fair weather too for the Alps, Italy and the Balkans. Low pressure over the eastern Mediterranean brings heavy rain to Greece and southern Turkey, snow for the mountains. Wet too for Cyprus. Dry and cool for areas near the Black Sea, also Hungary.
Windy for the Netherlands, Germany and much of Scandinavia, with low pressure in charge, centred over Finland. Gales possible for Denmark, Norway and southern Sweden. Heavy snow for north facing parts of Norway. A cold front passes south-east across Poland and Germany, bringing a spell of rain, then wintry showers. Snow is likely to fall widely over the mountains of Poland.
