Gales developing northern Europe


Tuesday
Hot and dry for southern Spain and Portugal, 30 to 35C. Much cooler for northern Iberia, 20 to 25C. Low pressure centred over northern Italy brings rain, which also affects Slovenia and southern Austria. A strong mistral wind for southern France. Dry for much of the Mediterranean, plus Greece . Hot around the Black Sea, topping 30C. Thunderstorms breaking out for Romania and western Ukraine. A zone of thundery rain also affects eastern Poland.
Cool and unsettled conditions for north-western Europe. Breezy for Germany and the Low Countries, with heavy showers spreading west to east. Scattered showers for central & northern France. Gales developing around the English Channel and southern North Sea overnight. Showery too for southern Scandinavia. Drier around the southern Baltic, but some heavy rain pivots north across northern Sweden and Finland.


Wednesday
A rapidly moving depression passes quickly eastwards across northern Europe, bringing heavy rain and gale force winds to the Low Countries, northern Germnay and southern Scandinavia. Widespread strong winds for central-northern Europe. A further pulse of heavy rain spreads from the west across northern France during the day. The far north avoids the worst of this storm system, with scattered showers for northern Norway and Sweden.
Meanwhile, southern Europe stays dry and warm under high pressure. Plenty of sunshine for the Mediterranean, plus the Balkans and Black Sea regions. Hot again for south-western Spain and Portugal, topping 35C locally.
